Arduino Laundry Dryer

Arduino Laundry Dryer

Wet laundry inspired this project. An array of fans is controlled by a custom Arduino speed controller.

Our clothes drying rack is a set of 3 IKEA Grundtal racks mounted in a corner. Air flow is minimal and clothes take 24+ hours to dry on them.

The brains of this project were an Arduino Micro, which would combine with a custom PCB to provide speed control for the fans.

The structure of the fan assembly was modeled in Fusion360 and printed in PLA. Stainless Steel rods were hand-polished and 120mm fans added.

The fans were wired in parallel and connected to the fan controller. A 12V power supply is run through a FET which is fed a square wave to control output. A housing for the PCB was designed and printed with status LED's and a control knob.

To test the assembly, a wet cloth was hung beneath the fans and dried to the same weight. With the fans off, it dried in 15 hours. With the fans running, it dried in 3 hours. Quite a smashing success, and one of our favourite additions to the house.
